Failure of the students in their examinations now it is a big issue trending in the streets. Parents are asking, why most of the students fail their examinations? The same question is also asked by government officials, Why most of the students fail their examinations? Failure of the students in their examinations is not an occasion which happens within a single day, but it is a process which involve number of reasons.
The following are the causes of students failure in examinations;
1. LACK OF GOOD STUDY NOTES
Some of students they do not have good and relevant notes to review. When the time for examination approach they find themselves without somewhere to refer. Since they lack a well broken down and simplified concepts jotted down, it become very difficult to review large part within Short period of time which lead to failure to reach their goals.
2. IMPROPER AND MISDIRECTED PREPARATIONS.
Before getting into the examination a student must prepare his/her mind and arrange well the concepts in a way that will be easy to remember. Some student fail their examination because they do not prepare according to the directions and guidelines of that particular subjects.
3. IMPROPER METHOD OF STUDYING.
The method of studying also can determine whether a student can pass or fail an examination. Most students don’t know how to read and the conditions that best suit their body system. It baffles me how students who haven’t read throughout the semester would want to cover every topic in just one week prior exam.
Most of the students who fail in their examination lack proper method of studying, Some they of them study new and confusing concepts near by the time of examination, some do not concentrate on the most important things but they read to complete the coverage only.
4.LACK OF EXAMINATION STRATEGIES
Most of the students who fail in their examination they do not have strategies on how they can face the examination. The do not plan even which question they are going to start with and which question they end with. In any battle it's very easy to fail if you don't have strategies to face the enemy. They say '"If you don't plan, you are planning to fail "
5. LACK OF AWARENESS IN ANSWERING QUESTIONS DEPENDING ON NATURE.
Depending on the nature, Every question has it's style of answering. Some needs Short answers, brief description, And some Long answers like essay questions. When a student give just Short notes to the essay question he/she is likely to fail the question. Therefore the answer depends on the nature of the question.
6. PROBLEM OF STUDY AND TIME MANAGEMENT.
Time is very important in every aspect. In studies the time for examination preparation should be well used, don't spend time for unnecessary things, Mostly the students who fail their examination fail first in study time management at last they meet themselves lacking time to study important things for the examination. In examination venues also it's very important to management every second of your time, unwise use of time can lead to failure. For example,If you have One hour to answer 60 questions and you spend 2 minutes on each question. Mathematically, you will only answer just 30 questions and that spells failure.
7.LACK OF MOTIVATION.
To get good grades and pass exams, you have to aspire for it. A student who does not realise why they need to succeed, will not succeed. A student who don't want to motivate himself or herself by studying hard, he/she is likely to be broken hearted before the end of the journey. They say "success is not for the Chosen few, but for the few who chose to succeed".
8. PEER FRIENDS
Choosing friends that fill a void tends to lead to either very good or very bad behaviour. If you keep friends who don’t mind failing, then you are not far from failing. These friends would make sure they discourage you from studying hard for exams, see to it that you join them in skipping classes and change your orientation that you can never pass. Since you can’t beat them, you join them.
9.NOT ASKING QUESTIONS.
Students who fail are those who are not ready to ask for help when they need it. By asking questions, students ensure their own success by ensuring that their education meets their individual needs. Without asking questions one can think that he/she has got the target but missed it.
10 POOR ATTENDANCE.
Students who don't attend the class regularly they are likely to fail their examinations, this is because If you are not in the class, you cannot learn. And if you have not learnt what are you going to answer in the examination venue?
11.PARENT INVOLVEMENT.
If parents are aware of the school and teacher expectations, and can enforce solid work habits at home, the student will be successful. Without parent support, students have a much harder route to success. Close parent supervision are the key to success. The student needs to have a strong adult who they trust to guide them through their education. If they do not have this, the feeling of helplessness can cause a student to give up. Students need to be empowered to be in control of their education.
12.STUDENT'S LAZINESS
One of the biggest reasons why students fail examination is laziness. A lecturer once said “we don’t have dumb students, but lazy students.” When a student is lazy, he finds it difficult to read, attend classes, do homework, and make researches and other things that can ensure examination success. How is it possible to successfully sit for an exam you virtually know nothing of? Exam success doesn’t work like magic, it involves hard work and diligence.
13 .OVER CONFIDENCE
Some students are too confident of themselves that they overlook those tiny things that count. Over-confidence could lead to under performance. Nobody said a little self-confidence in your abilities is wrong but being Over-Confident could be dangerous. Just because you have an idea in a topic does not mean you should go sit for the exam believing that reading such topic would be a waste of time. No matter how simple or small something or somebody may appear, don’t be too sure that you don’t need them. Over-confidence kills.
14.LACK OF INTEREST.
One of the reasons why students fail exams is lack of interest. It would be an uphill task to pass a subject you don’t have interest in. A students who don't like solving number problems it will be difficult for him to pass mathematics or physics.
15.BAD ATTITUDE
Many people don’t really know what the mind-set is one of the reasons why students fail exam. Everything in life lies in the mind. “Whether you think you can, or you think you can’t — you’re right” (Henry Ford). If you have the mind-set that you will fail, no matter the effort you put in it, you will end up failing.
16.TOO ENGAGED
Some students are just too engaged in one activity or the other that they have no time to figure out why they are too engaged. They have virtually joined all the organizations on campus in such a way that today’s lecture collides with rehearsal class. On returning from the rehearsal, he or she is too tired to study for tomorrow’s text — Failure starts.
17. FINANCIAL PROBLEMS
One of the reasons why students fail exams is their financial power. Poor financial status can hinder students from buying materials that would enhance exam success. They find it hard to get good meals, resourceful materials for studying, and gadgets to make their research works and assignments easier. Paying for excursion to different educational places would also be pretty difficult. A student with very low financial power would be forced to look out for alternatives which are a distraction to their academics.
18.BAD TEACHERS
Bad teachers make bad students. Some lecturers are just out and out terrible. These set of teachers need to go back to school to begin learning from the scratch. Some teachers have taught their students errors and these students are suffering for it in their respective colleges and institutions. Some campus lecturers are rude, sadists and cruel to students and this has made the students to lose interest in their subjects.
18. PROCRASTINATION
Procrastination is the thief of time, another big reason why students fail. “I will do it later! I will do it later!” You end up not doing it. “Never leave that till tomorrow which you can do today.” Do that reading or assignment today; do not push it till the next day.
20.LATENESS FOR EXAMINATION.
Not only does late coming to the exam hall make you disorganized, it makes you feel like you have missed out on some very vital things. Imagine you having a 2hour exam by 8:00am, you arrived the exam hall by 8:45am, you have the following to do: Explain yourself to the supervisor the reasons for coming late, locate your seat, collect your question paper and answer sheet and try to put yourself in one piece. You have just wasted more minutes. Now your brain have to do two things at a time: answer the question and calm your nerves. You end up writing poorly under a very short time.
21. INCOMPLETE MATERIALS NEEDED FOR EXAMINATION
Incomplete materials in the exam hall are also one of the reasons why students fail exam. A student going for a calculation based exam without a calculator or a technical drawing exam without a pencil or ruler. How will he or she pass?
22.FUILURE TO FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS
Failure to follow instructions in an examination hall would be your own undoing. Don’t start when you are not asked to, shade properly where necessary, stop when you are asked to, read the instructions given carefully and answer according to the number of questions you are asked to answer, submit at the appropriate time and place.
The above reasons for the students failure in the examinations, should not be an excuse for their because most of the reasons are within the students control and capability and very few are the results of circumstances which can be adjusted only with easy. The ability to see the obstacle or an enemy enable to find a way out before you get into the problem. I have written this to illuminate the way so that students, parents,teachers and anyone concern should find the solutions to these causes of failure early before it happen to them.
